Obsessive anti aging

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , on April 7, 2009 by Asher Rospigliosi

I just read a piece in the Guardian on the tendency for women in the public eye to avoid showing their natural age. It rings very true. Having just read two pieces about the menopause and how linked western perceptions of this aspect of womanhood are to a male centred view of ‘what women are good for’. The idea that if a woman does not look fertile, she is of little value is so insidious and widespread, it kinda depresses me. It makes me long for the feisty older women friends that my mum used to introduce into my life before she died, or my mother in law and the strong Vincy women I knew through her.

The two books on menopause I read review of include real good suggestions about how to reject the push of our culture towards invisibility for older women (don’t wear beige :-): About Time: Growing Old Disgracefully (Irma Kurtz) and Hot Flushes, Cold Science: A History of the Modern Menopause (Louise Foxcroft).

OK, enough mawking about how it is, and not liking it, better get in touch with my hero: Tipi Jean
