Nice and short, one terrible day for a crisis struck middle aged white American in the late fifties. Interesting references to hop heads and he sure pops a lot of pills. A very male book (is that a Bellow thang?) I wonder if Roth read this, it has that angsty feeling I associate with Roth’s picture of American middle class work life, so different from Updike (who I so much prefer, the joy in sex is so good with him).
I do think he is good on the claustrophobic feeling that comes when it is all going wrong, and there is no getting away.
