Murakami: A Wild Sheep Chase

Murakami: A Wild Sheep Chase

This was such a great discovery for me, two Murakami’s I had not read, with the Dolphin Hotel as a joining theme. This early story has all the great Murakami ingredients, strange metaphysical concepts mixed into a very grounded description of the things that make everyday life feel real. Always a pleasure to him muse on food, music, travel, new towns and old weirdoes (there is a chauffeur with a phone line to god!) – Also, always a pleasure to read his hot sex scenes, and the idea of a girlfriend with ears so beautiful she has to keep them covered is stunning BUT, his phalocentricisim does leave me feeling there is something limited in his world. The girl is only ever referred to as ‘my girlfriend’. No name!
